Crosshairs

“Shoot the boy, then the old man.”

“Herbert, stop talking and go find my medication. I’ll act when it’s time.”

“The time is now. Shoot the child.”

He placed the crosshairs on the boy’s head. From this distance, his Russian-built Dragunov would easily remove the child’s head. His finger hovered over the Dragunov’s trigger as he chewed his bottom lip, fighting the impulse to initiate the war.

“No, Herbert. Our troops are marching our way as we speak. Hundreds more wait for us to release them. We will finish our mission.”

“You are weak, a coward. Afraid to kill an enemy child even as millions of our children have been slaughtered by the scourge RAM set loose upon us. I pray you live forever so you can relive your failures every day for eternity.”

“Herbert, if you speak again, I will feed you to our hungry soldiers. You’ll serve as an appetizer before they devour this homestead.”

He felt Herbert’s frosty stare on his neck. Spinning sharply to meet the glare of his archenemy, he found the man had once again fled.

“You won’t even stay to fight! Who’s the coward?”

From a distant point in the derelict home that served as their base camp, a voice answered him, “No, Bobby Smith! You are the coward.”
